“Meet the Staff”: Emily LeBeau

What’s a quote that motivates you throughout the day?
There are two: “Education is not the filing of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.” A quote W.B. Yeats.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” A quote from Martin Luther King Jr.

What’s your most memorable NSBR moment?
Meeting the team for the first time!

What are your favorite go-to locations to recharge and gain inspiration/motivation?
Schools, anywhere outdoors, or coffee with teachers, parents, or leaders.

What is the funniest joke you’ve heard recently?
“Hey mom! It’s time to get up!” … said my 3 year-old at 2 a.m. last night.

What’s some insider knowledge that only people in your line of work have?
Teachers are the hardest-working, most compassionate, and committed individuals I have ever met.

What’s about to get much better?
Once my youngest is potty trained? My life. 🙂

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

What sets NSBR apart?
The people.

What bit of trivia do you know that is very interesting but also very useless?
Topic: Dry-Fly Fly Fishing.  Fact: King Louis XIV banned pineapples in France after biting into one that was unpeeled.

What really needs to be modernized?
The way we think about – and approach – talent management in education.

What topic could you spend hours talking about?
With kids or adults? Kids and I can talk endlessly about Minecraft, zombies, and nature.

With adults: Movies, potty training tips, cooking, all things outdoors, science, education, professional development … With my husband: how awesome sleep is.

What do you do to make the world a better place?
My husband and I are trying to raise two boys to be empathetic, kind, and brave.

What’s your favorite thing about Baton Rouge?
The people!

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned from a work of fiction?
People are good at heart; they’re doing the best they can with what they have.
