Education is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Students have different interests, talents, and learning styles, and knowing which school is the best fit for your child’s needs can be a difficult decision to make. From academic programs and school culture to support services, facilities, and extracurricular opportunities, there are many factors families must consider.
Historically, choices for Baton Rouge families have been limited. Families faced the difficult decision of either investing in private education or attending the traditional public school assigned to their attendance zone, whether it was the best fit for their child.
However, over the last several years, that has changed with the popularity and accessibility of charter schools in Baton Rouge. A charter school is a free public school operated by an independent organization instead of the local school district. Charter schools have much more autonomy over operational, employment, and instructional decisions than traditional public schools. They are free to make decisions that best fit the needs of their students and families.
To learn more about the difference between charter and traditional public schools, read Victoria Mikota’s article, Charter Schools: Making the Grade, in Baton Rouge Parents Magazine.
